Choosing website hosting in South Africa: what to check before you buy

By Noiz / 19th October 2026 | 7 min

Choose website hosting by what your site does, not by the name on the plan. A brochure site or a static site needs disk space, email and a server that stays up. A site that runs code, such as a shop, a booking system or an application you are building, needs processing power and developer tools. Once you know which of the two you have, check where the servers are, what the limits are, what is backed up, who answers when something breaks, and what the plan costs over a full year.

Start with what your site does

Most websites fall into one of two groups, and each needs different things from its hosting.

Your site What it needs most Noiz plan
A brochure site, a static site, or a low-traffic WordPress site, with business email Disk space, mailboxes, a weekly backup and reliability Legacy (sLegacy)
A shop, a membership or booking site, a busy WordPress site, a Laravel or Node.js build Processing power of its own, plus SSH, Git and a choice of PHP version Premium (sPremium)

Legacy gives you the most disk for your money in our range, with bundled mailboxes. It runs PHP on a shared pool and leaves out the developer toolset: there is no SSH, Git, Node.js or Ruby. For a site that mostly serves pages and email, you do not need them.

Premium is the hosting we recommend when a site does real work. Every Premium tier has its own dedicated PHP-FPM pool, so a busy neighbour on the server cannot take your site's PHP workers. It adds SSH, Git, Node.js, Ruby, your choice of PHP version, and WP Toolkit for staging and cloning WordPress sites.

Moving from Legacy to Premium later is a plan change on the same control panel, not a migration. You can start small and move up when the site needs it.

Where the servers are

Our shared hosting runs on servers we operate in the Samrand facility in Gauteng. Your site and your mail are stored in South Africa, under South African law, by a company you have a contract with and can reach directly.

Distance also matters for your visitors. Every page request travels to the server and back. When most of your visitors are in South Africa, a server in South Africa keeps that round trip short.

Read the limits, not the adjectives

A hosting plan is a share of a real server: processor cores, memory and disk. Words such as "unlimited" do not tell you how much of that share is yours.

Before you buy any website hosting, look for:

  • Published cores and memory. These decide how much work your site can do at once. Every Noiz tier prints them beside its price.
  • Disk, and what counts against it. Website files, databases and mailboxes usually share the same disk.
  • What happens at the limit. On Noiz shared hosting, memory is a hard limit, because that keeps every site on the server safe. Disk above your plan is billed per gigabyte on the excess instead of taking the site offline, so a mailbox that fills overnight does not stop your website.

The figures on each Noiz plan are the caps. If a site needs more, the answer is the next tier.

What should come as standard

Some things should be included in any shared hosting plan without an add-on. On every Noiz plan you get:

  • the Plesk control panel, with one-click installers for WordPress and other applications
  • free Let's Encrypt certificates, issued and renewed for you
  • email with webmail, IMAP and SMTP, and spam and virus filtering
  • a weekly backup, kept off site
  • SSD storage throughout

Ask any host how often backups run, where they are kept and what they cover. A backup stored on the same server as your site will not help if that server fails.

Building your site with AI

AI assistants can now write a good part of a website. The hosting you choose decides how they can help.

On Legacy, an assistant can write a static site: plain HTML, CSS and images. You upload the files over FTPS or through the file manager in Plesk. No code runs on the server when a visitor arrives, which leaves very little to attack and very little to keep updated.

On Premium, an AI coding tool can work inside your hosting account over SSH. It can pull your code from Git, run a build with Node.js, test changes on a staging copy of a WordPress site, and deploy when you are happy. Your choice of PHP version means the code runs on the version it was written for.

A few habits keep this safe:

  • Give the tool its own SSH key, so you can remove its access without changing yours.
  • Take a backup or a staging copy before it changes a live site.
  • Read what it changed before you publish it.

Our help centre has more on practical ways to use AI with WordPress.

Work out the price over a year

The monthly price on a hosting page is only part of the cost. Before you choose, check:

  • whether the price shown is the monthly or the annual rate, and what the plan renews at
  • whether a free domain is free only for the first year
  • whether VAT is added at checkout
  • whether there is a fixed contract term

Noiz shared hosting is billed monthly or annually with no fixed term. Noiz is not VAT registered, so the price shown is the price you pay. A new Legacy or Premium order includes the first registration of a .co.za domain; renewals are paid. Every price is on the shared hosting page.

Know who answers when something breaks

When your site or mail stops working, you want to reach the people who run the server. At Noiz, tickets from your account go straight to them. You can also message us on Signal or WhatsApp, and the help centre has step-by-step guides.

It also helps to know where the line sits. Noiz runs the server, the control panel, mail filtering, certificates and backups. You run your site: its code, themes and plugins, and their updates. If you would rather we kept WordPress up to date too, WordPress Care is a separate add-on.

A short checklist

  • What does your site do: serve pages, or run code?
  • Where are the servers, and under which country's law is your data?
  • Are the cores, memory and disk published?
  • What happens when you reach a limit?
  • Are certificates, email and backups included, and where are backups kept?
  • What does the plan cost over twelve months, with VAT and renewals?
  • Who do you speak to when something breaks?

Ask which plan fits

Tell us what your site does and how busy it gets, and we will say which plan fits, with no charge for asking. Compare the tiers on the shared hosting page or open a ticket.
