Odoo vs SAP Business One: which ERP fits a South African business?

By Noiz / 19th October 2026 | 8 min

SAP Business One is a mature ERP for small and midsize businesses, especially manufacturers and distributors, sold and supported only through SAP partners, with named-user licences and an annual maintenance contract. Odoo Community does the same core jobs with no licence fee, and adds a website, online shop and point of sale that Business One does not include. Business One suits a business that wants SAP's maturity and partner network; Odoo suits one that wants the customer-facing side on the same system and the freedom to run it anywhere.

This comparison sets the two side by side, as at October 2026. Odoo here means Odoo Community, the open source edition that Noiz deploys, hosts and supports. Our reasons for choosing it are in Why we choose Odoo ERP.

What Odoo Community and SAP Business One are

Odoo Community is the open source edition of Odoo, released under the GNU Lesser General Public License version 3 (LGPL v3). Odoo SA publishes a new major version every year. Community covers invoicing, inventory, purchasing, sales, CRM, manufacturing, repairs, projects, a website builder, an online shop and point of sale on one database. Odoo SA also sells Odoo Enterprise, a paid edition that adds full accounting and other apps on top of the same code.

SAP Business One is SAP's ERP for small and midsize businesses. SAP says there is no minimum company size and claims more than 83,000 customers worldwide. It covers financials, sales, purchasing, inventory, production and material requirements planning (MRP), service, projects and reporting. The current version is 10.0, released in April 2020 and extended through twice-yearly feature packages; the latest is Feature Package 2608 (August 2026). SAP lists 10.0 in mainstream maintenance until 31 December 2028, and says Version 11 will follow, without a date.

Licensing and cost

Odoo Community has no licence fee and no per-user charge. You pay for hosting and for whatever support and development you buy.

SAP Business One is licensed per named user. User types include Professional (full access), three Limited types (Financials, Logistics, CRM), Starter Package, two mobile user types and Indirect Access. Users may not share a name, and only Professional users may build add-ons with the software development kit. Support, upgrades and new versions depend on a valid maintenance contract. Business One is sold only through SAP partners, and SAP's product page offers a quote rather than published prices. Third-party guides publish estimates (linked in the sources).

The user mix matters. A Starter Package licence cannot be combined with other licence types, and it excludes production orders, so a manufacturer that starts small and grows has to move to new licence types.

Hosting, data and ownership

Where it runs. Business One runs on Microsoft SQL Server on Windows Server, or on SAP HANA with SUSE Linux on the server and Windows on the desktop. You can run it on your own servers, and certified SAP partners offer it hosted in the cloud. Odoo Community runs on any ordinary GNU/Linux server, with nothing to install on users' computers beyond a browser.

Who can run the customisations. Business One add-ons are built against SAP's own interfaces: the SDK, which runs only on Windows, the Service Layer and the web client. They run only on Business One. Odoo customisations are Python modules. They run unchanged on Community and on Enterprise, with any Odoo host you choose (Odoo's own Online service is the exception, because it does not run custom modules).

Upgrades. With a valid maintenance contract, SAP provides new versions and updates at no extra charge, and your partner applies them. On Odoo Community, moving to a new major version is a migration project, which is real work.

Leaving. On your own servers, the Business One database is yours, and SAP says nearly all objects and reports can be exported to Excel, Word or PDF. With a partner-hosted service, getting the data out depends on that partner's contract. On Odoo Community, you hold the database and the code at all times.

Where SAP Business One is stronger

  • Manufacturing. Multilevel bills of materials, production orders, backflush, standard cost management, resources and MRP with forecasts are standard.
  • Maturity and a published maintenance policy. Version 10.0 has been in use since 2020, and SAP commits to at least five years of mainstream maintenance per release family.
  • Partner network. SAP claims more than 850 partners and 500 add-ons. SAP's Partner Finder lists 12 Business One partners with a South African location, including large consulting firms.
  • Analytics on SAP HANA. The HANA version adds analytics dashboards, cash-flow forecasting and advanced available-to-promise.

Where Odoo is stronger

  • The front of the business, included. Odoo Community has a website builder, online shop, point of sale and customer portal on the same database as stock and invoicing. Business One relies on partner add-ons for each.
  • No licence, no user types. There is no named-user count, no licence type to outgrow and no maintenance contract to keep up.
  • Runs on Linux and in the browser. Odoo needs no Windows server and no desktop client.
  • South African payments. Third-party modules connect Yoco, Ozow and PayFast to Odoo's shop and invoices.
  • Code you keep. Custom modules run on any Odoo host, and the database stays where you put it.

Payroll on either system

Neither product runs South African payroll. Business One's HR module records employees, absences and reviews but processes no payroll, and Odoo's payroll app is part of Enterprise and has no South African localisation. On both, a specialist such as SimplePay, PaySpace or Sage payroll does the payslips and SARS filings, and the totals post to the ERP.

When to choose which

Choose SAP Business One if manufacturing and MRP are central to your business, you want an established SAP partner to implement and support it, you are comfortable with named-user licences and a maintenance contract, and you do not need a website or point of sale on the same system.

Choose Odoo Community if you want stock, sales, a website, an online shop and point of sale on one system, would rather not pay licence fees, want to run it on Linux on a server you choose, and want to keep the custom work you pay for.
