Odoo vs Sage: when a South African business outgrows its accounting package

By Noiz / 19th October 2026 | 8 min

Sage is strongest where South African compliance matters most: VAT, SARS payroll returns, bank feeds from local banks, and the accountants who already know it. Odoo Community is a whole business system, with stock, sales, purchasing, a website, an online shop and point of sale on one database, no licence fee, and code you own. Many businesses that outgrow Sage keep a Sage payroll product for payslips and SARS, and run the rest of the business on Odoo.

Noiz made that move itself. We replaced Sage with Odoo Community years ago, and still run the company on it; Why we choose Odoo ERP explains why. This article compares the two fairly, as at October 2026. Odoo here means Odoo Community, the open source edition we deploy, host and support.

The Sage family in South Africa

Sage sells several separate products in South Africa, built at different times on different technology. Which one you have matters more than the Sage name.

Product Who it is for Where it runs How it is sold
Sage Accounting Sole traders and small businesses Sage's cloud only Monthly or annual subscription, rand prices published
Sage 50cloud Pastel (Partner, Xpress) Small businesses with a bookkeeper Installed on your PC or file server 12-month licence that renews, rand prices published
Sage 200 Evolution Growing small and medium businesses Windows, on Microsoft SQL Server Initial and annual licence fee, through partners
Sage 300cloud Mid-market, multi-company Several deployment options By quote
Sage Intacct Finance teams in mid-sized and multi-entity businesses Sage's cloud only Annual subscription, by quote, through Sage or certified partners
Sage X3 Manufacturers and distributors Sage's cloud, private cloud or on-premises By quote
Sage payroll products (Sage Payroll, Payroll Advanced, Pastel Payroll, Premier Payroll and HR, 300 People) From start-ups to large employers Cloud or desktop, by product Published prices for the small products, by quote for the larger ones

Two dates matter for Pastel users. Sage switched off the legacy Pastel point of sale module after 31 August 2026, and support for Pastel versions below 18 ends on 31 January 2027.

Requirement by requirement

The middle column is Sage's small-business products (Sage Accounting and Pastel). The right-hand column is its larger products (Sage 200 Evolution, Intacct and X3), which differ from each other; the text notes where.

Licensing and cost

Odoo Community has no licence fee and no per-user charge. You pay for hosting, support and any development.

Every current Sage product is a subscription or carries an annual fee. Sage Accounting and Pastel are priced by plan, users and companies, with paid add-ons, and Sage publishes those prices in rand on its website. Sage 200 Evolution has an initial licence fee and an annual licence fee, and its agreement says the annual fee is needed for continued access to the software. Evolution, 300cloud, Intacct and X3 are priced by quote; Intacct's South African terms say fees are in the currency on the order. Sage's agreements allow it to raise fees at renewal.

Hosting, data and ownership

Who controls your data. Sage Accounting and Sage Intacct are hosted by Sage, so Sage holds your data. Pastel and Sage 200 Evolution install on your own computer or server, so the data stays with you. Odoo Community runs on any GNU/Linux server, so you decide where it is held.

Who owns the changes. Sage's South African agreements say Sage owns modifications to its software, including work a Sage partner prepares, unless agreed otherwise in writing. On Odoo Community, the modules written for you are Python code you own. They run unchanged on Community or on Odoo Enterprise, with any host.

Leaving. Sage's Sage Accounting and Intacct terms let you export your data during the subscription. After it ends, Sage keeps the data for six months, may help with export at its hourly consulting rate, and may then delete it. On Odoo Community, you hold the database and the code at all times.

Where Sage is stronger

  • South African compliance, ready-made. Sage's payroll products calculate PAYE, UIF, SDL and ETI, produce EMP201 and IRP5 returns, and cover bargaining councils. Odoo has no South African payroll at all.
  • Bank feeds. Sage connects to over 30 South African banks and card providers, with direct feeds from FNB, Nedbank and Investec at no extra cost. Odoo's bank synchronisation is part of Odoo Enterprise and works through third-party providers; on Community, statements are imported as files.
  • Accountants. Sage gives accounting practices a free Accountants Edition, a directory listing and electronic VAT201 submission, so many practices already work in it.
  • Group finance. Sage Intacct consolidates many entities with automated eliminations, and includes AI agents for bill capture, anomaly detection and month-end close.
  • Simplicity for a small business. If all you need is invoicing, VAT and a bank feed, Sage Accounting does that with no setup project.

Where Odoo is stronger

  • One system for the whole business. Odoo Community puts accounting, stock, purchasing, sales, CRM, manufacturing, a website, an online shop and point of sale on one database. On Sage, those come from separate products, add-ons or third-party connectors.
  • No licence fee. Adding users, a branch or a warehouse does not change a licence bill.
  • Code and data you own. Custom modules belong to you, and the database stays where you put it.
  • Room to grow without a platform change. A business can start on Community and later move the same database to Odoo Enterprise, keeping its custom modules.

Use both: Sage payroll with Odoo

Payroll is where Sage's South African strength is greatest and Odoo's is absent. The practical answer for many businesses is to keep a Sage payroll product, or another specialist such as SimplePay or PaySpace, for payslips and SARS returns, and post the payroll totals to Odoo each month. That keeps compliance with a specialist that updates for SARS changes, and the rest of the business on one system.

When to choose which

Stay with Sage if your business is mainly invoicing and VAT, your accountant runs the books in Sage, you need Sage's bank feeds, or you are a finance-led group that needs Intacct's consolidation.

Move to Odoo Community if you are juggling Sage plus separate stock, shop, point of sale and CRM tools, want them on one system, would rather not pay licence fees, and want to own the code and decide where your data is held. If you are on an older Pastel version facing the January 2027 support cut-off, it is a natural time to compare.

Talk to us about moving from Sage to Odoo

Noiz runs Odoo Community for South African businesses as Managed Odoo, on a server we run, or you can run it yourself on a Noiz Cloud server. If you are thinking of moving from Sage, get in touch for a short scoping conversation about what moves across, what stays with your payroll provider and what would need building.
