Developer hosting: which features matter, and when to choose it

By Noiz / 19th October 2026 | 5 min

Developer hosting is web hosting with the tools to build and deploy code on the server: SSH access, Git deploys, a choice of PHP and Node.js versions, and staging copies to test changes before they go live. Choose it when you or your developer work with code, rather than only edit pages in a browser. On Noiz, Premium is the developer plan: every tier includes SSH access to your own account, Git, Node.js, Ruby, your choice of PHP version and WP Toolkit staging, on a dedicated PHP pool, while Noiz still runs and patches the server. When you need root and a stack of your own, the next step is a Cloud server.

The features that matter

SSH: a command line on the server

SSH gives you a secure command line inside your hosting account, so you can move files, inspect logs and work on the site directly rather than through a file manager.

On Noiz Premium, SSH access is limited to your own hosting account, so you work freely on your sites without reaching anyone else's.

Use keys rather than passwords. OpenSSH creates Ed25519 keys by default, and its manual recommends a passphrase of 10 to 30 characters on each key. Give each person and each device its own key, and remove the key when someone leaves. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) warns that SSH keys are often left unmanaged and need proper issuing, removal and monitoring.

Git: deploy from a repository

With Git, your code lives in a repository and the server pulls from it. Plesk's Git support offers three modes: deploy automatically on every push, deploy when you click, or keep a repository without deploying. It can also run commands after each deploy, such as a database migration or a build step, and pull from GitHub or Bitbucket through a webhook. A private repository connects with an SSH key that Plesk generates for you.

A choice of PHP version

Each PHP version is supported for four years: two of active fixes, then two of security fixes only. As at October 2026:

PHP version Security fixes until
8.2 31 December 2026
8.3 31 December 2027
8.4 31 December 2028
8.5 31 December 2029

Choosing the version per site lets you move each site forward when its code is ready, test on a newer version first, and keep an older application running while you update it. On Premium you choose the PHP version for each site.

Node.js

Node.js runs JavaScript on the server, for build tools and for applications. The Node.js project says production applications should use only Active LTS or Maintenance LTS releases. Plesk's Node.js support, which Noiz Premium includes, lets you choose the version, the application folder and the startup file, and install dependencies from package.json.

Staging copies

A staging copy is a clone of your site where you test updates, themes and code before touching the live site. On Premium, WP Toolkit clones a WordPress site, with its files, database and settings, onto a staging subdomain, then copies changes back. You can copy back the files, the database or chosen database tables, so orders and form entries received on the live site while you worked are not overwritten. WP Toolkit suggests a restore point before copying; take it.

A dedicated PHP pool

Every Premium tier has its own PHP-FPM pool, so your site's PHP workers are not shared with other customers. A neighbour's traffic spike cannot take them, and your builds and background jobs have room to run.

When to choose developer hosting

You... Choose
Edit pages in WordPress and upload images Legacy is enough
Run a shop, a booking system or a busy WordPress site Premium, for the dedicated pool and staging
Deploy code from Git Premium
Build with Node.js, Laravel or a static site generator on the server Premium
Need root, your own services, containers or a custom stack A Cloud server

What Noiz runs, and what you run

On Premium, Noiz runs the server: the operating system, the web server, PHP-FPM, mail, certificates, the panel and the weekly off-site backup. You run your code and your choices: the PHP version, your SSH keys, your Git deploys and your builds.

That split is the point of developer hosting. You get the tools to build, without the system administration. If you need to control the operating system too, a Noiz Cloud server gives you full root on Ubuntu or Debian, and the server is then yours to run.
